A client called me last month, confused. Her rankings were fine. Her site was healthy. And her traffic had quietly dropped by a third. Nothing was broken. Something had changed.
What changed was Google. With AI Mode, Google increasingly answers the question right on the results page. The user reads the answer and never clicks. You can rank in position one and still lose the visit, because the visit no longer happens. This is the shift breaking traffic for businesses that did nothing wrong.
01 · What AI Mode actually changed
For twenty years the deal was simple: rank a link, earn the click. AI Mode broke that deal. Google now reads the top sources, writes the answer itself, and shows it before any link. The user gets what they came for without leaving the page.
The numbers tell the story. Already 43 percent of Google searches end without a click. With AI Mode active, that jumps to 93 percent. The click is becoming the exception, not the rule.
02 · Why this is not the end of search
It is easy to read those numbers and panic. Do not. Google still drives the large majority of all referral traffic to websites, around 87.5 percent. Search did not die. The click did. And the traffic that still comes through is more valuable than it has ever been.
03 · How to become the answer
If the answer is the destination, your job is to be the source that answer is built from. That discipline is GEO, generative engine optimization. It is not a trick. It is making your content the clearest, most trustworthy source on your topic.
04 · The plumbing problem (a conversation from our kitchen table)
The mistake most businesses make is treating this as a content problem only. It is also a connection problem. The warmer traffic AI sends is worth nothing if it lands on a page that captures nothing.
