Last week AI got freer, cheaper and more serious. OpenAI opened ChatGPT free and unlimited, Google made its fast model cheaper and even builds your video, and up top there was a reshuffle: the White House sat down with the big labs and DeepMind changed hands. Translation for your business: more people than ever are asking AI who to hire. Let's break it down.
In this edition:
- The big one: ChatGPT is now free and unlimited.
- Also this week: Google gets cheaper + AI video.
- In brief: markets, a leadership change and in-house chips.
- Your play of the week + a copy-paste prompt.
1. The big one: ChatGPT is now free and unlimited
OpenAI opened the free ChatGPT plan to default to its GPT-5.6 Luna model with unlimited text chats, plus a "Think" button for harder questions (OpenAI, Aug 6, 2026).
What it means for your business: when a tool goes from "limited" to "free and unlimited," it stops being tried and becomes a daily habit. Your customer no longer only searches Google, they ask ChatGPT who is best in your category and city, and act on that answer. 37% of searches already start on AI platforms (Eight Oh Two, 2026), and this pushes that up. We gave it the full blog on Monday, with the 60-second test to see if AI recommends you. Go deeper: What is GEO? The complete guide.
2. Google made its everyday model cheaper (and faster)
Google shipped Gemini 3.6 Flash to general availability: more efficient and cheaper than the prior version, built for quick day-to-day tasks (Google AI for Developers, August 2026).
What it means for your business: the cost of using AI to reply, summarize or qualify leads keeps dropping. Automating your first response to a lead is no longer a big-company luxury, it is a this-week decision. Go deeper: how to stop losing clients from lack of follow-up.
3. AI now builds your video from text
In the same batch, Google introduced Gemini Omni Flash, a model that creates video clips from text, image, video or audio, and edits scenes (Google AI for Developers, August 2026).
What it means for your business: video, the most expensive barrier for a small business, is becoming accessible. It does not replace your face or your story, but it lowers the cost of producing the content people actually watch.
4. AI sits down with the White House
The White House met with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta to discuss an AI safety and regulation framework (Indianapolis Business Journal, August 2026).
What it means for your business: when a technology becomes a policy conversation, it stopped being a fad. That is the signal to build your AI visibility and systems now, not "once it settles."
In brief (the rest of the week)
- OpenAI heads toward the public markets. Per press reports, its financial prospectus is expected in August (Axios, related coverage).
- Musical chairs at Google. Demis Hassabis stepped down as Google DeepMind CEO to chair it and become Alphabet's chief scientist; Jeff Dean left after 27 years to found Discovery Loop (CNBC, Aug 5, 2026).
- Anthropic will build its own chips. It is assembling a silicon team to design custom chips for Claude, aiming to cut per-token cost by roughly 50% (TechCrunch, Aug 5, 2026).
Hub365's take
Three of these stories point the same way: AI stopped being a trend and became infrastructure. When OpenAI heads to the public markets, Google makes its models cheaper and Anthropic builds its own chips, the message for your business is one: this is not going away, it is getting cheaper and getting into everything. The edge is no longer "using AI", everyone will. The edge is being the business AI recommends when your customer asks. That is where your attention pays off this quarter, not on the next shiny model.
Skip it this week
You do not need to act on Google's leadership shuffle or which chip Anthropic uses. Those are context, not tasks. Your one real task this week is below.
Your play this week (2 minutes)
Now that everyone uses ChatGPT for free, do what your customer does. Paste this into ChatGPT:
"Act as a customer looking for [your service] in [your city]. Which businesses do you recommend and why?"
If you are not in the answer, it is not bad luck: AI does not recognize you as a source yet. That is fixable, and it is exactly what GEO does.
From reading to doing with Hub365

- Get it weekly. Subscribe to The AI Edge and get what matters in AI in 5 minutes, plus the 60-second test to see if AI already recommends you.
- Talk to us. Book a 30-minute GEO audit and we will show you where AI skips you and what to fix in 14 days (hub365.ai).
Your takeaway: AI keeps getting freer, cheaper and more used. The only question that matters is whether you are one of the names your customer sees when they ask AI.
