GEO Quick-Start Guide: Survive and Win in Google AI Mode

GEO Quick-Start Guide

Survive and win in Google AI Mode

5 technical fixes you can implement today to show up in Google AI Mode. Most take under 30 minutes. Some take 5.

93% of searches in Google AI Mode are answered without sending anyone to a website. Your rankings may be holding. Your traffic is quietly disappearing.
The honest situation The 5 fixes below are the first things we check on every client audit. None of them require a developer. All of them directly affect whether AI systems like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity can read, understand, and cite your business.

The 5 fixes

Five technical fixes, ranked by speed

Each fix shows: time required, impact level, and the exact action. Start with Fix 1, it takes 5 minutes.

1

Open your door to AI crawlers

⏱ Time 5 minutes
📊 Impact Critical
🔧 Difficulty Beginner

Check your robots.txt file right now: yourdomain.com/robots.txt

If you don't see these lines, add them:

📝 Add to robots.txtUser-agent: GPTBot
Allow: /

User-agent: ClaudeBot
Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GoogleOther
Allow: /
Why this matters AI systems use dedicated crawlers to read your content. If robots.txt doesn't explicitly allow them, they may be blocked from reading your site entirely, regardless of how good your content is. This is the single most common technical issue we find. And it's a 5-minute fix.
2

Add a TL;DR summary to every blog post

⏱ Time 10-15 min/post
📊 Impact High
🔧 Difficulty Beginner

At the very top of every article, before the H1, add a 2-3 sentence plain-language summary of what the article covers.

📝 Format templateTL;DR: [What this article is about].
[The key insight or data point].
[What the reader will learn or be able to do after reading].
Why this matters AI systems are designed to extract and cite concise, structured answers. A TL;DR at the top of your article is the most direct signal you can give an AI that your content is citable. It's the format AI Overviews and AI Mode responses are built to pull from.
3

Install FAQ schema on your service pages

⏱ Time 20-30 min
📊 Impact High
🔧 Difficulty Intermediate

On every service page, add a FAQ section, at least 4 questions, and mark it up with FAQ schema (JSON-LD format).

📝 Basic JSON-LD structure{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "mainEntity": [{
    "@type": "Question",
    "name": "What is [your service]?",
    "acceptedAnswer": {
      "@type": "Answer",
      "text": "Your clear, direct answer here."
    }
  }]
}
Why this matters FAQ schema tells AI systems that your page contains structured question-and-answer content, exactly the format they pull from when generating AI Mode responses. Pages without FAQ schema are harder for AI to parse and cite.
4

Create or complete your llms.txt file

⏱ Time 15 minutes
📊 Impact Medium-High
🔧 Difficulty Beginner

Add a plain text file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt with the following information:

📝 llms.txt templatename: [Your Business Name]
description: [2-sentence description of what you do]
expertise: [Comma-separated list of your main topics/services]
location: [City, State/Country]
service_area: [Geographic area you serve]
contact: [your contact email]
website: [your URL]
Why this matters llms.txt is an emerging standard that tells AI language models the key facts about your business in a format they can read directly. It's the AI-era equivalent of a sitemap, and most businesses don't have one yet. Early movers have a meaningful advantage.
5

Verify Google Business Profile completeness

⏱ Time 20-30 min
📊 Impact High (local/regional)
🔧 Difficulty Beginner

Log into your Google Business Profile and confirm each of these:

✅ Verification checklist
  • Business name, address, phone number are 100% accurate and consistent with your website
  • Business category is as specific as possible (not just "Marketing Agency" but "Digital Marketing Agency")
  • Description is complete and uses the exact phrases your clients search for
  • You have posted at least once in the last 30 days
  • You have responded to every recent review, positive and negative
  • Hours are current and confirmed
Why this matters Google AI uses Business Profile data as a primary source for local business citations in AI Mode. Incomplete or inconsistent profiles directly reduce your citation probability. AI Overviews cross-reference your Profile data against your website, inconsistencies flag your business as lower-trust.

Quick diagnostic

Check your AI visibility right now

Open ChatGPT and Gemini side by side. Run these 3 searches in both. Compare what they say about you.

Test in
ChatGPT

Search the 3 queries below. Note whether your business appears in answers, and what context AI provides about you.

Test in
Gemini

Same 3 queries, different system. Discrepancies between the two reveal where your AI presence is weakest.

The 3 searches to run

  1. "[Your city] + [your primary service]", do you appear in the answer? Not the search results, the answer itself.
  2. "[Your industry] + [what problem you solve]", are you cited as an example or expert?
  3. Your business name directly, what does the AI say about you? Is it accurate? Is it complete?
The decision tree If you appear in 0 of 3: the 5 fixes above are urgent. Start today.
If you appear in 1-2 of 3: you have visibility but it's incomplete. Fixes 2, 3, and 4 close the gap.
If you appear in all 3: you're ahead. Use the scorecard below to find the deeper optimizations.

Implementation priority

Where to start first

If you only have 30 minutes today, do these in this order. The compound effect kicks in around Fix 3.

Start here · Fix 1 (robots.txt)

Without this, the other 4 fixes can't help you. This is the door.

Then · Fix 4 (llms.txt)

Quick win that most businesses don't have. Early-mover advantage.

Same day · Fix 5 (Google Business Profile)

If you serve a local market, this has the highest single-day ROI. Then come back later in the week for Fixes 2 and 3.

Todd's reality check Most businesses do Fix 2 (TL;DR) first because it feels like content work. Wrong order. If Fix 1 isn't done, AI crawlers can't read your TL;DR no matter how perfect it is. Open the door before you decorate the room.
